Zack Ford fires 2-under 70, leads way at EDGA Amateur – Sports – GoErie.com

Cochranton graduate leads Tyler Cozad by one shot after two rounds.

The format, be it match play or stroke play, isn’t the important detail.

What is to Zack Ford is the prestige of being called an EDGA champion for at least one of its majors.

The 2016 Cochranton graduate let that be known after Saturday’s second round of the 97th annual Marquette Savings Bank EDGA Amateur Tournament.

“I really want to get one of these (titles),” Ford said. “I’ve been close before, but ‘Kup’ was getting us every time.”

Ford meant Chris Kupniewski, the former Mercyhurst University golfer whose EDGA resume included last year’s Amateur title.

Kupniewski recently moved to Florida, so he wasn’t around this weekend to defend at Lake Shore Country Club.

Ford will play with Tyler Cozad and Daniel Leek in Sunday’s closing group.

Cozad, 26, who shared the first-round lead with Dave Hewett, is at 1-over.

Leek, representing Corry’s North Hills Golf Course, carded a 1-under 71. He’s two back of the lead.

Also at 2-over is Bob Paris, the 2001 Amateur medalist. Paris will be paired with Hewett (4-over), who shot 78 after opening with a 70.
